The competition goal is to create part of the “new city centre” with the highest quality of urban spaces and architecture, while accommodating more than 120.000 m2 of offices, residences, retail and culture.
Bratislava city centre is looking to expand into its former industrial area. This area is considered to be one of the last vacant plots in the central part of the city suitable for large scale projects and urban interventions.
The site is located in the eastern part of the city centre and is expected to be a new thriving centre. It has a close relationship with the river Danube and the medieval part of the city. Most warehouses and industrial building in the site
and its surrounding neighbourhood have been cleared with the exception of the disused heating plant, which is now a listed building.
A disused heating plant is located in the middle of the competition site and it is envisioned that the reuse and renovation of this building will form a future cultural core to this new city centre. At present, discussions with the Ministry of Culture is under way to explore the idea of turning this heating plant to a National Gallery of Contemporary Product Design, Visual Art and Architecture.
