012_VERTICAL SHOPPING

The task was the vertical, condensed organisation and coordination of the three fundamentally different programmatic categories (retail, commercial, residential) in a single tower in Istanbul. A typological exploration on the classical skyscraper with mostly a horizontal public-shopping base and a mono functional stacked office or housing slab, was the source of the project analysis. Further a research into circulation behaviours led to the distribution of public functions to a diagonal spacial pattern and private functions into a orthogonal spacial pattern. A morphologie between the wide diagonal public pattern and the porous orthogonal private pattern was created, which delinates a completely natural navigation based on the inclination of the surfaces and the porosity of the structure throughout the system and enhances the mix of functions. This led to the design of a prototype that demonstrates the principles of interarticulation and to the development of parametric adaptations to various functional formulations. The facade geometry adapts itself to the functional demands through a scaling adaptation. The typology of the system made us choose a site west of Istanbul, at the subway end station (coming from the airport). The site is surrounded by a high density housing area and provides enough frequency to legitimise a vertical public space throughout the building. The tower fades out into a low rise, high density housing structure, which allows a fluent contextual inbedment.
