“Costomutation “ is about objects ranging from a small scale up to a large scale (e.g from a shoe & bag to a villa & boat). All of them are either interactive & dynamic or adaptable to different situations.
For the villa the aim was to find an adaptive skin with a structural logic.
The solution came with the simulation of hanging models that allowed us to create different types of buildings which adapt to different sites. We generated shells that have an optimized structure. They need a minimal amount of material and can be used as a main roof for the villa or as a bottom of the boat.
One of the main tasks was to find a way how to enclose the spaces and how to deal with a tropical climate. The solution came with adding more layers that are able to split up and serve for different needs.
The main roof shell is made out of a thin concrete. It is covered by a lighter material that should have an integrated solar foil or cells. There is a gap between the top layer and the concrete shell so that air can circulate through. While gaining solar energy the top layer(shell) provides shading for the concrete. The Solar energy should be used for regulating the humidity in the closed spaces underneath. These closed spaces are created from another hanging process .
They are called ”bellies” and consist of 3 layesr. The inner one is perforated so that the humid air goes trough. The middle one is cooled by the sun energy so the water in the air can condense and go to the ground. A third one is enclosing and isolating.
These “bellies” are transparent spaces that have the potential to bring down the humidity and temperature.
