<p>Thinking Images – An Introduction to the Philosophy of Cinema</p>
<p>This course offers a wide-ranging introduction to various philosophical understandings of cinema, and it will pay particular attention to the different ways these understand the relationship between philosophy (concept) and cinema (image).<br />
The students will be expected to read short extracts from the philosophers discussed in each class, and the lectures will include watching and discussing parts of films.</p>
<p>Week 1; Introduction to Film-Philosophy.<br />
Week 2-3; A new technology, a new popular art, a new form of criticism (Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer).<br />
Week 4-5; Dream Images: Psychoanalysing the Cinematic Signifier (Christian Metz, Slavoj Zizek).<br />
Week 6-7; Postmodernism and the Politics of moving images (Frederic Jameson, Laura Mulvey, Homi K. Bhabha).<br />
Week 8-9; Gilles Deleuze and the Cinematic Image of Thought (also Henri Bergson and Andre Bazin).<br />
Week 10-11; Film Fables, Jacques Rancière and cinematic disagreements.<br />
Week 12-13; Alain Badiou, A Cinema of Ideas.</p>
